Personal Statement Guidance
The personal statement, or statement of purpose, is your opportunity to clearly outline your academic, professional, and career objectives. Additionally, it is your chance to tell us why you wish to pursue these objectives through graduate studies in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech. Your statement should discuss your background — including academic, research, and professional experience — as well as any unique specifics related to your qualifications for a graduate program. In short, your statement should address:
Why you wish to attend graduate school;
Why you wish to specifically attend the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech; and
How our program can help you reach your long-term goals.
Deadlines
Application deadlines vary by school/program. Some programs have deadlines as early as November for fall admission; assistantships and fellowships are commonly awarded in early spring for programs that begin in the fall. Contact your program of interest about deadlines for admission and early deadlines for financial aid and awards.
Please set aside sufficient time — usually about two to three weeks — for Graduate Studies to receive and process your supporting documents. Although Graduate Studies typically processes received materials in about one to two business days, it can take much longer for issuing parties to gather and submit the requested documents. NOTE: If you uploaded your supporting materials with your application, it is not necessary to mail them. If you were unable to upload them, please wait until you have submitted your online application to send your materials.
Supporting Documents
To apply for graduate school, you'll need to gather a number of supporting materials including three letters of recommendation (which will be provided online) and other documents such as transcripts, test scores, and verification of lawful presence. Click here for additional details about the letter of recommendation process and types of documents that will need to be submitted based on your status as a transient student, U.S. citizen, resident of Georgia, or non U.S. citizen/alien.
Application Fee
When you submit your application, all applicants will be asked to provide credit card information to pay the non-refundable application fee. The application fee for domestic applicants is $75; the application fee for international applicants is $85. This fee must be paid online via credit card or electronic check drawn on a U.S. bank account and your application will not be received until it's paid. If you have technical difficulties getting your payment to be accepted by the CollegeNET system, please send an email to help@applyweb.com. Include your CollegeNet user ID in the email and a description of your problem.
Registrar's Catalog
