ITEMS TO SUBMIT THROUGH THE ONLINE APPLICATION
The following items will be collected through the online application. If you
are applying to more than one program, you will need to submit the following for
each program to which you are applying (one per online application).
Unofficial Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts will be reviewed by the
Admission Committee and should be uploaded to the application. Official
transcripts are not required until an applicant accepts an offer of admission
from the School of Architecure, however offers of admission are not binding
until official transcripts have been received and verified by the Central
Graduate Admission office.
Resume / CV (Curriculum Vitae)
Statement of Intent: Descriptions for each department are located under the
Supplemental Material section in the application, and on our website HERE.
Essay: Required for all applications except the Master of Urban and
Environmental Planning. Descriptions of essay requirements for each department
are located under the Supplemental Material section in the application, and on
our website HERE.
Letters of Recommendation: You are required to submit three letters of
recommendation, at least two of which should be from former teachers if you
received your undergraduate degree within the last five years. Letters from
former employers are also encouraged. Your recommenders must submit their
letters of recommendation through the online application system. NOTE : You CAN submit
your application BEFORE your recommenders submit their recommendations. From
your online application click on "Recommendations" on the left menu and follow
the directions. Recommendation providers will receive an individual link via
email with instructions about how to submit their letter. Your recommendation
providers can be notified with our system before your application is submitted.
Recommendation providers can also submit their letters after your application
has been submitted. If you are applying to more than one program, you will need
to submit three letters of recommendation for each program to which you are
applying. Current UVa graduate students who are applying for a dual degree to
the Master of Urban and Environmental Planning program will need two letters,
one from a planning faculty member and the second from a faculty member in your
current department.
Portfolio: All Master of Architecture and/or Master of Landscape Architecture
applicants are required to submit an electronic portfolio with the online
application to each program. All applicants interested in pursuing the Urban
Design Certificate must also submit a portfolio. (Applicants to the Master of
Architectural History and Master of Urban and Environmental Planning programs
are not expected to submit portfolios unless applying for the Urban Design
Certificate. A portfolio is optional for applicants to the PhD in the
Constructed Environment program.) Applicants to the Master of Architecture Path
1 program must submit a portfolio which illustrates the design and/or research
issues they wish to pursue if admitted to the program.
For successful submission, the portfolio:
Must be no more than 15 MB. Any portfolio over 15 MB will not be accepted by
our online form.
Must be a pdf file. We do not accept any other file types.
The portfolios will be reviewed digitally (it will not be printed), therefore
we suggest formatting your portfolio for view on a computer screen, and we
suggest using a horizontal format in your design.
Do NOT include photos of yourself, your CV or your Social Security Number in
the electronic portfolio.
$75 non–refundable
application fee : You may submit your application fee via credit card
via the online application. Your application cannot be submitted until we
receive your non–refundable application fee. If you cannot pay by credit card,
please contact the Central Admission Office at garchadmission@virginia.edu or
434-243-0209.
You may be exempt from paying the $75 non–refundable application fee if:
You are a current graduate student in the School of Architecture applying for
a second degree.
You meet the criteria listed on the Application Fee Waiver Information
page.
Applicants who believe they may qualify for an application fee waiver should
submit an Application Fee Waiver Request Form.
ITEMS TO SUBMIT VIA ALTERNATIVE AGENCY
GRE scores. You are required to take the general test of the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE). Test scores should be forwarded directly from Educational
Testing Services to the University of Virginia. UVA's institution code number on
the GRE form is 5820 . You must
retake the exam if your scores are more than 5 years old. Scores must be
submitted by the appropriate application deadline listed above. Note: there is
no minimum score required to apply to the School of Architecture. Your
application will be considered complete with the unofficial scores you enter on
the application. However, offers of admissions are not binding until official
transcripts have been received and verified by the Central Graduate Admission

TOEFL or IELTS
scores. All graduate students whose first or native language is not
English are required to submit proof of language proficiency by submitting TOEFL
or IELTS scores. Students who have earned a 4 year bachelor's degree entirely
from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction are not
required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. You will note this exemption on the
application. You must retake the exam if the scores are more than 2 years old.
The minimum required score for the TOEFL exam is 600 for the paper–based exam,
250 for the computer–based exam, and 90 for the internet–based exam. Test scores
should be sent electronically from Educational Testing Services to the
University of Virginia (using institution code B875). Applicants taking the
IELTS should receive a minimum band score of 7.0 on the exam. IELTS scores
should also be sent electronically directly from IELTS to the University of
Virginia. Please do NOT send paper scores.
