Nowadays, governments in some countries take measures to stimulate the public to consume more. Many people believe it would have negative effects on the society, like environmental pollution. Personally, I partially agree with this assertion, and my reasons would be explored as below.

Admittedly, I have to concede that this incentive policy is economically beneficial to the society. To begin with, the running of public services seriously depends on a healthy economy. A thriving domestic consumption can provide more tax revenues for the government, which can, in turn, be invested in the maintenance and improvement of social infrastructure, schools, medical care and welfare systems. What is more, when more goods are produced, sold and consumed, new job opportunities are created, including industries of manufacturing, transportation, advertising, retailing and so forth. That is to say, moderate methods to enlarge the scale of public consumption are wise decision which will keep the development of a country on a right track.

When it comes to the influence of this trend, unfortunately, there is no denying that it is seriously detrimental to the environment. For one thing, as more new goods are bought, the whole industry expands. Expectedly, more natural resources like mines, woods, and fossil fuels would be exploited, which leads to the deforestation and devegetation. Besides, during the process of manufacturing, excessive amount of CO2, smog and chemical wastes would be discharged into the air, water and soil, thus deteriorating the environmental pollution. What is more, a number of broken electronic devices like TVs, computers and cell phones would be beyond the limit of the capacity of landfill, which means surrounding land would be degenerated with toxic wastes of heavy metals.

In conclusion, a national-wide pursuit of economic prosperity brings both advantages and disadvantages simultaneously. In my opinion, the encouragement for people to produce and buy more goods can make great contributions to the social stability. However, green and environmentally friendly technologies and facilities should be set in industrial production; otherwise the expanding industry might cause irreversible environmental problems.
