Last summer vacation, two senior students and I went to Singapore for a famous debating competition as the representatives of our school. It was quite a special experience to me since it was my first time abroad and I also met a lot of brilliant debaters from other countries. For an entire week, debaters from across Asia gathered in one place debating hot issues in the global arena, including global warming(温室效应), homosexual marriage(同性婚姻) and some economic issues. For 9 rounds of debate, we encountered many outstanding debaters from other countries in Asia. As the representatives of our school, we were under great pressure and did a lot of preparation for the tournament. Our hard work finally paid off since we broke into the elimination (淘汰赛)in the end, which was the first time in our school’s history. Apart from that, we were able to listen to different ideas and perspectives and learned a lot from other debaters. During the whole process, I came to realize the meaning of debating. Debating can bring the people who have the same ideas together and through cooperation, everyone in the debating team get the opportunity to show their talent. Moreover, debating with different people enables us to know more about our own biases(偏见), prejudices and ignorance. Through creative thinking, we are able to tear down our preconceived ideas and start to listen to other’s opinions and understand others.
