1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in the 50 percentile or higher in
all three test areas
Score must be less than 5 years old
2. 3 Letters of Recommendation
At least 2 from faculty/course instructors who are familiar with your work in
the classroom and/or lab
3. Research experience
Experience of working in a lab or project with faculty
This especially important for students applying to the PhD program.
4. English Proficiency Test score (applicants whose native language is not
English).
5. Academic Statement of Purpose
Statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and
how Michigan’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational
objectives. It should be 1-3 pages.
6. Personal Statment
This is not the Academic Statement of Purpose, but a discussion of the
personal journey/story that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. This should be 1 page.
