Materials science and engineering is one of engineering’s most highly
interdisciplinary and dynamic disciplines. Materials scientists and engineers
seek to understand the fundamental relationships between the structure,
properties, processing, and performance of materials toward the synthesis of new
materials. They also develop improved processes for making materials and work to
understand the role of materials in the functioning of biological organisms.
At Johns Hopkins, materials science and engineering exists at the
intersection of some of the most cutting-edge scientific and application
oriented fields, such as energy, biomedicine, nanotechnology, aerospace, and
electronics. Students here have the opportunity to work in one of 37 world-class
laboratories, with one-on-one faculty mentoring. Our faculty-to-student ratio is
1-to-5, so you and your career goals will get plenty of individualized
attention. Our focus areas of nanotechnology and biomaterials provide a solid
foundation for future career development, allowing you to move in many exciting
directions.
