Candidates for the M.S. degree in electrical engineering must complete 30 points of credit beyond the bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 15 points of credit must be at the 6000 level or higher. No credit will be allowed for undergraduate courses (3000 or lower). At least 15 points must be in electrical engineering, defined as including all courses with an ELEN designator or a joint designator containing electrical engineering as a member, e.g., EECS, CSEE, EEME, ECBM, etc. And it is expected that at least 12 of the first 24 points taken will be in electrical engineering.

Not all technical courses can be applied toward the M.S. degree, and some have restrictions. Also, no more than 6 points of research (such as ELEN E4998, ELEN E6001, and ELEN E6002) can be used, and no more than 3 points of approved courses that do not contain primarily engineering, math, or science content can be used. Any course that is not on the list of standard courses require prior written department approval, including during the summer session.

The general school requirements listed earlier in this bulletin, such as minimum GPA, must also be satisfied. All degree requirements must be completed within five years of the beginning of the first course credited toward the degree.

Additional Requirements  
If you meet the following criteria you must submit additional material(s) as indicated: 
 
Applied Physics Doctoral applicants: Official GRE Physics Subject Test Score 
 
International applicants or applicants whose undergraduate degree was received in a country in which English is not the official and spoken language must meet the following additional requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) official scores required. An exception is made for applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree or complete a master's degree in the United States before enrollment, in this case the applicant is not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores for admission. 
Doctoral applicants to Computer Science must send the following documents by postal mail upon submission of the application (applicants to other programs will be asked to provide these documents at a later date): 
1. Official transcript from every post-secondary institution attended, from the institution in a sealed envelope 
2. Official copies of diploma/degree certificates (international students only) 
3. Translation of the official transcript(s) and degree/diploma certificate(s) is required if the institution(s) you attended does not issue transcripts in English. The translation must be conducted by a reputable service provider.  Personal transcript translations will not be accepted. 
Candidates should not submit copies of awards, financial documentation, or other additional documents that are not required with the application. Submission of extra documents will not enhance chances of being admitted. Documents submitted will not be returned.

Tuition Deposit Policy: 
Applicants who have been accepted for admission will be required to submit a tuition deposit payment to hold their place in the new incoming class. The tuition deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. Therefore, if an admitted applicant pays the deposit, but fails to enroll for the particular program and term of the admission offer, the deposit will not be returned. After the end of the add/drop registration period tuition deposits paid will be credited to the enrolled student's account. More information will be provided upon admission in the admission notification and follow-up messages.

The EE MS program is flexible and customizable to the student’s individual goals. It allows students to pursue electrical engineering disciplines in depth, as well as to take a selection of courses from other Columbia engineering majors. Students can study topics from physical devices, to circuits and systems, to communications and networking, to signal, information and data processing, to computer engineering as well as systems biology or neuroengineering.
